Creating a new sensation in the K-POP

When NewJeans debuted, many people thought a foreign choreographer did the choreography.

This was because it was a departure from previous K-pop girls’ performances.

Whereas their previous performances had focused on powerful movements using the upper body and synchronized movements, NewJeans was characterized by large movements using the entire body.

Even on stage, the performance is characterized by the members making eye contact with each other as if they genuinely enjoy the dance.

The direction and choreography are a joint effort with BLACK.Q.

Kim Eun-ju is said to be BLACK.Q’s dance mentor, so the direction was probably decided mainly by her.

“It has to be the dance that best suits them.”

Kim Eun-ju constantly studies dance understands the songs well, and continues to create choreography.

She listens to the moment’s music and receives different inspirations depending on the situation that comes to mind.

She says she has an entirely different style when creating choreography for her idols and when creating choreography for her performances.

In 2019, when she took over as the head of the dance school, she said the following.

“When I create choreography for my performances, I would instead try dances that are not popular without hesitation. On the other hand, when I generate choreography for idols, I conceive the choreography by concentrating entirely on the singer’s song, image, and concept rather than my style. I asked the company for pictures of the singer dancing and continuously asked for the idea. The dance has to be the best fit for them.

The choreography is perfect for NewJeans’ youth.

Complete revision of the choreography for “Hype Boy”?!

NewJeans’ choreography is based on the concept of Min Hee-jin, CEO of ADOR.

Even before the formation of NewJeans, Min Hee-Jin shared the direction she wanted for the team.

It is “atypical freestyle”.

The CEO’s strong message is that it’s time to break away from the conventional stereotypical style.

Kim Eun-ju worked with BLACK.Q on the choreography based on the CEO’s idea, but the first ‘Hype boy’ choreography received a total revision request from the CEO.

After that, the reconstructed “Hype boy” had a strong impact and spread worldwide.

From this one case, the idea of the CEO and the choreographer must have been a perfect match.

It seems that the choreography of “Cookie” and “OMG” was OK at one time.

The world wonderfully received the performances that NewJeans sent out one after another.

Kim Eun-ju says to her students:

I tell the children never to rest on their laurels. They should not be satisfied with what they are doing well now but work hard to grow. That is the only way they can finally rid themselves of insecurity and prove their future.”

Kim Eun-Ju is strictly self-driven and continues her activities and research as a dancer and choreographer.

We will keep an eye on NewJeans’ performance evolving under her leadership.

Origin of the “BLACK.Q” naming

black.q profile4

The dancer’s name BLACK.Q comes from when he was on a team called “Wax of the World”.

He was known as “BLACK” because he often wore black among the team members.

After BLACK, he changed his real name, Kim Yong-hoo, to “Q” and pronounced it cutely as “Kyu” to create a mischievous atmosphere, and he became “BLACK.Q”.

It is said that the dancer’s name, “BLACK.Q,” was decided by Kim Eun-ju.

BLACK.Q’s personality

His sharp gaze when he is expressionless may seem dry for a moment, but his inner self is full of charm and affection. Even his language to his fans and his conversations with acquaintances are imbued with kindness.

He hates to be late for appointments, and he is punctual.

He once told me that when he was in college, his friend was three hours late to an appointment, and he kept mentioning it.

He is very service oriented and has performed NewJeans choreography at events. He is very personable, they say.

You can feel his personality!

Nicknamed “Father of NewJeans.”

Before NewJeans debut, he couldn’t help but cry when he saw the finished music video.

He said, “It’s a move that wipes the sweat off your face and makes your hair fly. The music video makes me feel beautiful and energized, just like my daughters.”

BLACK.Q’s words earned him the nickname “Father of NewJeans.”

Comparing Haerin‘s dancing from the past to the present shows how much effort she has put in.

The other members must have practiced excellently.

Since I have seen their efforts and passion closest to me, it is no wonder I commented on their actions as if I were a father.

I applaud this beautiful father-daughter bond!

Other

BLACK.Q stylishly wears clothes.

He is very fond of accessories.

He changes necklaces frequently, mostly beaded necklaces.

He also wears rings and bracelets often and three-ring earrings constantly.

BLACK.Q’s fashion sense is also notable.

How was it?

We found that the choreography team has created a production that captures the unique characteristics of the NewJeans members.
