Yunjin (LE SSERAFIM) Before debut

High School Musical

Yunjin was born in Korea and moved to New York, USA, when she was eight months old.

Since her grandmother studied vocal music, Yunjin also attended choir with her grandmother when she was young and became interested in vocal music.

She took voice lessons in junior high school and started musicals after entering high school.

At the 2017 High School Musical Theatre Awards at Proctors, Niskayuna High School, which he attended, performed Phantom of the Opera, and Yunjin played the role of Carlotta.

She was nominated in the Best Actress category for her performance, in which she handled the soft high register parts.

The Best Actor and Best Actress awards winners can participate in The Jimmy Awards, a national high school competition.

In addition, they were invited to Broadway in New York City, but unfortunately, they did not win the awards.

Confident that she had been nominated, she wanted to broaden her genre but rarely saw any success for Orientals in the U.S. market.

At that time, BTS won its first award at the venerable American Music Awards.

Seeing them was encouraging and gave him pride as a Korean, and he decided to try k-pop.

Failed idol practitioner

Yunjin sang Adele’s “All I Ask” at PLEDIS Entertainment’s global auditions in New York City in August 2017 and was accepted.

PLEDIS Entertainment is a Korean entertainment agency under Hybe Labels.

She spent the beginning of 2018 in Korea as a trainee. In April of the same year, she participated in “Produce 48“. She placed 26th in the final.

Choreography video of Havana, a song that was highly rated at the time of Produce 48, on September 22 of the same year.

She enrolled in the Practical Music Department at Hanlim High School for Performing Arts on March 4, 2019.

On August 13, Yunjin and others released a video introducing Hanlim Performing Arts High School in English.

As a trainee, she recalls some painful experiences: her family was lonely in the U.S., she wanted to express her thoughts in Korean but could not communicate them well, and she gradually became blocked because there was no one around who could speak English, so she could not use English either.

She lived as a trainee in PLEDIS and moved to Source Music in the middle of her career, but was dropped and released at the end of the month evaluation. She also dropped out of Hanlim High School of Performing Arts.

I think it was a painful experience for Yunjin.

“I can’t live without music and theater.”

She returned to the U.S. with a broken heart. After about a year and a half of intense study, I was accepted into a business major at the university.

Although she passed the entrance exam, there was something that stuck in the corner of her mind.

It was the feeling that she could not live without music and the stage and wanted to be on stage.

This thought was so strong that he could not give up being a trainee.

Yunjin says she was discriminated against as an Oriental in the U.S. and ridiculed as an American in Korea.

Early on, she was confused about her identity and sometimes felt depressed that she did not fit in in any country she went to.

It was music and K-POP that healed her broken heart.

She was preparing for college when Source Music cast her in their debut group.

She had previously received offers from several entertainment companies, but she had turned them down because she was in a neurotic state.

When she heard the concept of LE SSERAFIM, she had a gut feeling: “I must debut with this team.

Finally, he had caught the stage of his dream.

Before debuting as LE SSERAFIM, Yunjin spent three years as a PLEDIS and Source Music trainee, making her the longest trainee of all the members.

In an interview with Weverse magazine, Yunjin said,

“I want to be an artist who can fully express myself through music and positively impact the world through music.” As LE SSRAFIM, I would be pleased if I could realize that dream in any way, and I love composing and writing lyrics even more. I can do that because what I can do now are music and stage, so I can say what I want and express through that. And I would love to do a world tour as LE SSRAFIM. I also want to do a stadium tour!”

So LE SSERAFIM is a group that gives form to the feelings that Yunjin has carried with her!

She is the main vocalist in LE SSERAFIM.

Since PRODUCE 48, she has been known for her vocal abilities, including her husky tone, solid vocal delivery, and rich voice.

She has the most parts in her debut song FEARLESS.

After the debut of LE SSERAFIM, she has less opportunity to showcase her high notes as before, but instead, she performs many minutes, including bass parts, with her attractive tone.

She has studied voice, experienced opera, and musical theater, and has a stable voice.

Yunjin (LE SSERAFIM) Dance Styles

She has a solid foundation in dance and performs with power and moderation.

When she was active in PRODUCE 48, Yunjin’s nickname was “Kirin-chan.”

Perhaps because the name Yunjin is challenging to pronounce, almost all the members at that time called her “Kirin-chan.

The nickname came about partly because of her height but also because she could not dance properly during dance training, and her teacher, puzzled, said, “You look like a newborn giraffe.”

This “giraffe” has improved rapidly as a trainee at Source Music.

She has improved not only her dancing but also her stage dominance.

In particular, she can be cited as one of the members who made good use of the Blue Flame stage.

She also fits firmly into the LE SSERAFIM concept (I am not afraid) and is sometimes called the team’s identity.

She is often responsible for dance breaks and challenging moves on the big stage.

It’s hard to believe she used to be a lousy dancer.

Solo music released

Yunjin first became interested in music at the age of 10 when a friend introduced him to Taylor Swift, and he tried his hand at writing music and lyrics for the first time.

He also wrote the lyrics for LE SSERAFIM’s Blue Flame.

She shares her thoughts on lyrics.

Usually, when I write lyrics, I feel like I write a lot about myself. What kind of person I am, what type of person I want to be, what kind of struggles I have, and so on. I tend to write mainly about things I want to tell myself, things I want to tell someone else, or things I want to comfort them with.

Her wish came to fruition.

On August 9, 2022, Yoonjin’s first solo song, “Raise y_our glass” in collaboration with the producer, was released to celebrate the 100th day of LE SSERAFIM’s debut.

The underbar ( _ ) in the center of the title has a double meaning: let’s raise your glass (your) and let’s raise our (our) glass.

The fans’ reaction has been positive, with some praising the quality of the song as high even though it is his first self-written song.

On January 9, 2023, the company released its song “I ≠ DOLL” (Idol).

The title of the song is a combination of “I” (I), meaning me, and “doll” (DOLL), meaning doll.

Since the main character in the music video is herself, the song is often misunderstood as autobiographical, but this is not Yunjin’s personal story; she wrote the song while considering the position of all her idols.

She drew the characters and drawings in the music video.

The music video was ranked among the most popular in six countries: Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, and France.

After the release of “I≠DOLL,” Yunjin sent the following message.

If my first own composition, “Raise y_our glass,” was a song about my experiences before and feelings right after my debut, “I≠DOLL” (idol) is a song expressing my thoughts about new things I have learned since my debut.

I put into music what I have experienced firsthand or seen objectively from a third-party perspective over the past few months.

Sometimes appearance can be the main criterion for evaluating someone, but I strive to put distance between one person’s value and appearance. This is because appearance is not all that describes a person.

However, some people can get caught up in fragmented appearances, simplifying a person into a likeness and cutting and pasting images of others to suit their tastes.

I ≠ DOLL reflects my feelings in the face of all this. I hope that the message of this song will reach more people.

You will know how she feels in her heart.

Almost everyone seems to call her “Kirin-chan,” probably because the Korean word Yunjin is challenging to pronounce.

The nickname “Kirin” came about partly because of her height but also because when she was a trainee, she could not dance properly during dance training, and her bewildered teacher remarked that she looked like a newborn giraffe.

The round pendant necklace she frequently wears was bought by her grandmother when Yunjin was born, for she is a snake sign, and she wears it as a good luck charm.
