Hanni (NewJeans) is Vietnamese Australian
Hanni’s parents are Vietnamese.
Her father is from the capital city of Hanoi, and her mother is from Ho Chi Minh City.
Hanni was raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, to these parents.

Today, her entire family, including her grandparents, still lives in Australia.
The Vietnamese government grants citizenship to Vietnamese citizens regardless of their place of birth as long as one of the parents is a Vietnamese citizen.
It was confirmed through official press materials from the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Hanni is a Vietnamese citizen.
Hanni also used an Australian passport at Gimpo International Airport on December 28, 2022.
Since the rule is that Australian citizens must enter and leave Australia with an Australian passport, Hanni is also an Australian citizen.
So, Hanni is a multiple national of Vietnam and Australia.

Speaks three languages
Hanni speaks three languages: English, Vietnamese, and Korean.
Of the three languages, speaking in English seems to be the easiest.
She speaks Vietnamese with her family but is not very good at it.
It seems that she can speak Korean better than Vietnamese now.
Korean pronunciation seems natural, but challenging Korean is still hard to understand.

Hanni (NewJeans) Before Debut
Hanni learned taekwondo and ballet when she was young.
She learned taekwondo because her grandfather worked at a taekwondo cram school.
She can also play the ukulele.
She learned to play the ukulele after discovering it in a class in the third and fourth grades of elementary school.
She has never lived in Vietnam, her parents’ hometown, and has only traveled there several times.
When she was in the lower elementary school grades, she traveled to South Korea with her family.
At that time, she visited Gyeongbokgung, the royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. There is also a photo of her wearing a hanbok.
Her Catholic family influenced Hanni to attend a Catholic private school for middle and high school.
Hanni loved Wan Her Direction, and when she was in fourth grade, she took the placard to a Wan Her Direction concert in Melbourne with her mother and her sister.
During her senior year in 2014, she auditioned for the children’s version of ‘The Voice Kids Australia’ and sang the song by One Her Direction.
So the concert was a turning point in her life!
One day when she became a junior high school student, her friend showed her a K-POP video and told her, “There is music like this.”
She was amazed that there was such a new world; she had been into K-POP since then.
In September 2019, Big Hit Entertainment (currently HYBE) and Source Music applied for a “PLUS GLOBAL AUDITION” jointly held in Melbourne. She then passed by singing Dody Clark’s “Would you be so kind” on her ukulele.
After that, she worked for a few months in Melbourne with a Vietnamese friend as her dance team ‘Aemina’ doing her K-pop covers before going to South Korea as her trainee.
The group’s logo has the Korean word “Emina” instead of English, suggesting that she loved Korea.
Since she was a first-year high school student in 2020, she practiced at Source Music and ADOR for about two years.
As a trainee in 2021, she appeared in the music video for BTS’s “Permission to Dance” with New Jeans member Minji.
